The Susquehanna women’s soccer team hosted Lycoming College on Saturday afternoon for the Landmark Conference opener at home. Both teams began their conference games with a draw, and yielded that result with a 1-1 score. This occurred after a penalty shot from Lycoming matching an earlier goal by graduate student , Emily Wertz.

Both teams’ defenses received a lot of action in the first half. Lycoming and Susquehanna struggled to get the ball in the attacking end with many shots taken. The River Hawks had three attempts, while the Warriors had just one in the half, though they would draw a save from junior Kayleigh Saboja in the SU goal.

At the start of the second half, a back-and-forth in the early minutes began that eventually led to the goal for the River Hawks. A brilliant counterattack would see senior Juliana DeGeorge make a perfect pass through the Lycoming defense to give Wertz a chance to shoot into the goal.

With time running out and the River Hawks looking to take the win, a controversial handball called in the 80th minute allowed Lycoming a penalty kick. The Warriors’ leading scorer, Mikayla Long, scored as well as she successfully made the penalty and sealed the draw, with neither team able to score in the final ten minutes.

The River Hawks women’s soccer team’s next game is on Saturday, Oct. 7, at 3:30 p.m. They will remain at home to host Elizabethtown College.

The River Hawks return home on Saturday, Oct. 7, at 3:30 p.m. to host Elizabethtown College.
