Susquehanna University Presents The Lion in Winter

Posted on April 13, 2026 by The Quill

Directed by Prof. Erik Viker, and starring Dr. Kevin Crowe as King Henry

Press Release by Lily Warshaw

Selinsgrove, PA—Susquehanna University’s Department of Theatre proudly presents The Lion in Winter, the dark, humorous, and award-winning play written by James Goldman, which tells the story of royalty, power, betrayal, and toxic familial relationships.

Directed by Professor Erik Viker, this compelling production will be staged at the Degenstein Center Theater on the Susquehanna University campus. Performances are scheduled for April 24 and 25 at 7:30 p.m, with a matinee performance on April 26 at 2:30 p.m.

The play takes place during 1183 A.D. It depicts King Henry II’s three sons, who all want to inherit the throne, but the king won’t commit to a choice.

When he allows his imprisoned wife, Eleanor of Aquitaine, out for a Christmas visit, they all plot to force him to decide. The characters align and realign, revealing past betrayals and attempts to murder one another to secure the throne.

Told in “marvelously articulate language, with humor that bristles and burns (“Los Angeles Times”), The Lion in Winter is a play that transcends the historical genre to become a bitingly hilarious family drama. In addition, in 1993, it was the first student play in the Degenstein Center Theater.

Admission is $12 for adults, $8 for seniors and non-SU students, and free for SU students and faculty. All tickets for Department of Theatre productions can be purchased via the box office in the Degenstein Campus Center Theatre lobby, by phone at 570-372-ARTS, or online at susqu.universitytickets.com. The box office will also be open for one hour before each performance.

Please visit the Susquehanna University Theatre Department’s official page for more information on this production and other upcoming events.
