Although this Halloween and homecoming week were like no other in Susquehanna’s history, the school and its organizations did their best to make it enjoyable for all.

Residence Life regularly hosts SU Late Nights three times a semester, which can include things from painting pumpkins to playing real-life PacMan.

According to Residence Life staff, their most recent event, “Trick-or-Treat Spike-Tacular,” took place on Oct. 30 and included  candy bags, volleyball, lawn games and a raffle for second-generation AirPods for those in attendance.

All the events were structured to have the least amount of physical interaction between people and any objects involved in the event. There was concern regarding the amount of people because it was a Friday night, but Residence Life took all the safety precautions necessary and followed university protocols.

The Student Activities Committee (SAC), who runs weekly events and hosts annual events such as Fallchella and the Spring Carnival, also contributed to the events this week. They hosted pumpkin painting and haunted gingerbread house decorating.

“Since we will be leaving before the holiday season, we still wanted SU to keep the gingerbread house tradition, so we modified it to be Halloween themed,” said SAC President Sara Hager.

SAC, like all campus organizations, has been impacted by the pandemic and had to rethink their approaches to certain events such as the number of people attending the event, the location and even vendors, many of which are not doing business right now.

While this may seem negative, many of the events are being hosted virtually to allow for more attendance, which means that even those students who are remote, can participate with their fellow students.

Charlie’s Coffee House also got into the Halloween spirit, hosting multiple events including “Witch Hat Ring Toss” and “Pop Goes the Pumpkin.” They hosted a costume contest that was available to all students, on campus and off campus.

The next upcoming virtual event is SU’s Got Talent and auditions can be submitted until Nov. 6.
