Swimming and Diving Have Strong Performances at Landmark Championships

 The Susquehanna men’s swimming team finished in second place overall and the women’s team finished in third place overall at the Landmark Conference Championships in Germantown, Md. between Feb. 14 and Feb. 16.

During the first day, sophomore Eric Towse was a star swimmer for the Susquehanna men’s team, being part of two records set on Friday night. 

The first record came as Towse was swimming the backstroke off the third leg in the 400 medley relay with a time of 51.41. 

This 400 medley relay team also set a school-record time of 3:27.57, with contributions by Towse, senior Shane Sullivan, junior Brett Walker, and freshman Andre Fissella. 

Freshman Jayden Corrigan stepped up to the plate in the 500 freestyle, notching second in 4:42.92, claiming All-Landmark Second Team honors, with junior Luke Henry coming in seventh. 

In the B final of the 500 free, junior Owen Kelly was the first to finish for the River Hawks, placing 14th in 4:54.48. 

Towse added to his accolades by picking up All-Landmark Second Team honors, claiming second in the 200 individual medley (IM) with a time of 1:54.21. 

Senior captain David Grove, Walker, Fissella, and freshman John Imburgia joined forces for the 200 free relay, collecting third place in 1:25.40. 

Walker led the charge in the 50 free with a fourth-place finish in 21.42. 

Towse once again led Susquehanna on day two, breaking his 100-backstroke record twice with an end time of 50.36.  

Towards the start of the contest, freshman Jayden Corrigan achieved his second All-Landmark Second Team award with a second-place finish in the 400 individual medley with a time of 4:07.94, with sophomore Colton Smith placing fifth. 

Afterwards, junior Brett Walker also earned an All-Landmark Second Team award with a second-place finish in the 200 freestyle with 1:43.33. 

Junior Luke Henry kept up the pressure in the consolation finals of the 200 free with an 11th-place finish at 1:48.82. 

Towse, senior Shane Sullivan, Fissella and Imburgia joined forces for a third-place finish in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:34.69. 

Junior Owen Kelly, Towse, Corrigan, and Walker achieved third in the 800 free relay in 7:03.00. 

Sullivan went on to place fourth in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 58:58, followed by Fissella in seventh. 

Freshman Evan Bova also collected second in the consolation finals of the 100 breaststroke in 1:00.45 for 10th overall. 

Grove backed up Towse in the 100 backstroke, taking fifth in 53:55. 

In the 100 butterfly, junior Anthony Principe paced the River Hawks with a sixth-place finish in 52:57, followed by Fissella in eighth. 

The River Hawk men’s swim team made a statement Sunday night, as they finished as Landmark runner-ups for the third consecutive season.

Susquehanna notched 637.5 points to come in second with Catholic The Catholic University of America claiming the top spot. 

Towse kept his momentum from the previous days, setting a new school record in the 200 backstroke in the preliminaries with a time of 1:51.99. 

Towse would also achieve a second All-Landmark First Team award by placing first in the 200 backstroke in 1:52.04. 

Principe found success in the 200 butterfly, placing second with a time of 1:57.47 for an All-Landmark Second Team award. 

The 400 freestyle relay team, consisting of Towse, Grove, Walker, and Fissella placed third in 3:08.91. 

Walker went on to take fourth in the 100 free with a time of 47.01. 

Sullivan, meanwhile, placed seventh in the 200 breaststroke in 2:11.42, followed by Bova in eighth. 

Finally, in the consolation finals of the 1,650 free, Kelly clocked in first in 17:20.08 for ninth overall, concluding the season for the men’s team.

The Susquehanna women’s swim team joined the men in the Landmark Championships in Boyds, Md., for the first day of the contest on Friday, placing third in the overall standings. 

Firstly, senior captain Megan Shaffer achieved All-Landmark Second Team honors in the 500 freestyle as she came in second with a time of 5:13.05.

Freshman Haley Muth was the second All-Landmark selection of the night as she placed second in the 50 free in 24.43. 

A foursome of junior Abby Condon, juniors Olivia Fravel and Tori Weems, and Muth claimed third in the 400 medley relay with a time of 4:05.97. 

Muth, Weems, sophomore Sabrina Krotzer, and freshman Julia Adams then finished fourth in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:39.68. 

Senior Kelly Weins notched fifth in three-meter diving with a score of 252.70. 

Weems was also able to pace Susquehanna in the 200 individual medley by finishing seventh in 2:15.28. 

The River Hawks kept going strong on the second day of Landmark Championships, with nine top-eight finishes on Saturday. 

Shaffer racked up her second All-Landmark Conference award during the meet, with Susquehanna staying in third in the rankings at the time with 422 points. 

Shaffer also notched second in the 400 individual medley with a time of 4:40.82. 

A foursome consisting of freshman Julia Adams, Muth, sophomores Paige Swartz and Krotzer placed third in the 200 medley relay in 1:49.74. Muth would also advance to take third place in the 100 butterfly in 58.92. 

Fravel nabbed third in the 100 breaststroke in 1:06.41, followed by Muth in fifth and Swartz in sixth. 

Afterward, Shaffer, sophomore Larisa Calvo, Weems, and senior Caitlin Kelly combined for bronze in the 800 freestyle relay in 8:01.65. Weems would also go on to place fifth in the 200 free in 1:59.17. 

In one-meter diving, Weins led Susquehanna with a score of 291.00 for a fourth-place finish. 

Fravel led the River Hawks on the last day of the Landmark Championships on Sunday,  claiming All-Landmark Conference First Team honors in the 200 breaststroke. 

Ending up with the sole first-place finish for Susquehanna, Fravel finished the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:23.11. Swartz was also a key figure, nabbing fourth in the same event in 2:30.80. 

Kelly earned bronze in the 1,650 freestyle in 18:17.98, followed by Calvo in fifth and sophomore Victoria Morin in 11th

Weems led the River Hawks in the 100 free, notching third in 55.14, while Krotzer claimed fourth in the 200 butterfly in 2:12.22. 

Afterwards, the foursome Muth, Weems, Swartz, and Fravel took fourth in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:39.53. 

Condon also notched fifth in the 200 backstroke in 2:10.62, while Shaffer finished sixth. 

This concludes the season for the Susquehanna women’s swim team.
