Ever since you were a little kid there’s always been your mom, or your dad, standing over you telling you to clean your room. Since it is a chore that no one really likes doing, it would get done reluctantly, and aftersome persuasion. Cleaning your room is something that nobody seems to really like doing, but still one of those things that just has to get done. But now, we’re in college, and it’s great because we have the freedom to do what we want. Who cares if our room isn’t clean, it’s not like we’re getting graded on this, which is really all that matters. To a certain extent, there’s no one really forcing us to make sure our rooms are clean. Unless your room looks like a biohazard, and your roommate doesn’t care or complain, you’re in the clear on cleaning your room.

On the surface this seems like a fantasy, a dream come true, almost. Except, don’t you feel kind of stressed when your room is not cleaned? Maybe it’s just me, but I’ve noticed that when I’m stressed out, having my room a mess only makes things worse.

I’ll have a pile of homework that needs to get done, and what feels like no time to do it. I’ll walk back to my room, ready to knock all of it out, and find that there’s not really a lot of space to do it. My bed is full of clothes that I haven’t put away and my laptop charger is nowhere to be found. Worst of all, this is just one more thing added onto my ever-growing list. I don’t have time to do it then, but now I have to because there’s no where else to do it. Shoving it the side isn’t ideal, because working in the middle of a cluttered desk is annoying. Now, imagine going back to your room and everything is right where it should be. All of your stuff is nice and organized. None of your clothes are scattered throughout the room, and you don’t have to go searching to find something. Working in an environment like this is more peaceful than trying to work somewhere where everything is scattered and disorganized. Since you’ll inevitably have to clean your room at some point, it also keeps one less thing off of your to do list.

Generally, I just think it’s better to live and work in a space that’s clean and orderly. Had I taken the time to put things away, then I wouldn’t have walked into a messy room and would feel more motivated to do my work. Unless your room is totally wrecked, then it only takes about twenty minutes to really make sure everything is put away and organized. After that, you can sit down and do your work without the stress of clutter surrounding you. Even though there’s no one telling you to do it anymore, it’s still something that should get done. Maybe afterwards you’ll even feel better, too.
