Over the years, technology has continued to develop and change in ways that have undoubtedly impacted not only the way we live but the way in which society operates as a whole. The increases and advancements in technology have also noticeably impacted a wide variety of industries, with one being the world of professional sports. While all professional sports have certainly been altered by new forms of technology, Major League Baseball stands out as one league that has felt major effects, with some being positive and some being negative. On the positive side, the way in which the sport is broadcasted and the way in which it is viewed by fans has certainly improved over time. Teams have also improved the way in which they operate, as technological advancements and increased knowledge have allowed teams to put a heavy emphasis on the use of data analytics, which directly correlates to the way in which they scout, prepare and strategize. The negative impacts that these advancements have made on the game of baseball at the professional level have been more concerning. Recently, the Houston Astros were fined $5 million by the league and lost multiple draft picks after an investigation proved that the organization was using a camera in centerfield to decode signs, which were then translated to hitters via noises made in the dugout. Hitters, at times, knew what pitches were coming thanks to an illegal scheme based off of an increased use of technology. In addition to the fine and the loss of draft picks, General Manager Jeff Luhnow and Manager AJ Hinch were both handed one-year suspensions and ultimately fired by the team. Red Sox Manager Alex Cora along with Mets Manager Carlos Beltran, two former members of the Astros organization, also lost their respective positions. As far as how impactful this scheme was, it’s a bit difficult to truly tell on a hitter-by-hitter basis, but it’s a fact that both the Astros and the Red Sox have won World Series championships in recent years while this scandal was reportedly taking place. Advancements in technology have had astronomical impacts on the world. The advancements have also benefited professional sports, one of the most lucrative industries on the planet. But it’s become clear that these advancements can cast a negative light on sports, as organizations, coaches, and players now have access to tools that allow them to gain unfair advantages. Hopefully, this scandal resonates within the league and we can return to a time where the game of baseball is played the right way, on a fair and honest playing field.
