Senior attacker Kathrina Demaio eclipsed the 100-point mark for her career, but the Susquehanna women’s lacrosse team dropped a tough 19–9 defeat to Landmark Conference-rival Moravian on April 6 in Bethlehem, Pa.

“You cannot reach 100 points unless you are surrounded by an amazing team and have a great coaching staff,” Demaio said. “I’ve been blessed by the group of girls I get to play with and the coaches I have had the privilege of being coached by.”

Demaio recorded a hat trick on the day for the River Hawks but before she could reach the milestone, the Greyhounds quickly took control of the game and scored the first six goals of the contest.

Susquehanna chipped into the lead with back-to-back goals. The first was scored by junior attacker Gabi Toohey on an assist from senior attacker Brooke Klair and the second was scored by Demaio on an assist from freshman defender/midfielder Katie Hoerman.

Moravian continued to find offensive success on the day, scoring two more goals to extend the lead to 8–2.

As the first half neared its end, the River Hawks continued to put up a fight, as Demaio and junior attacker Stephanie Dowling each scored goals. The Greyhounds kept the pressure on, however, adding two more goals of their own to take a 10–4 lead into the half.

Susquehanna found some success to begin the second half, as goals were scored by Demaio and senior attacker Helena Woytovich.

As the minutes ticked off the clock, Hoerman, Klair and senior attacker Kaitlin Homberg all added goals for Susquehanna, but it wouldn’t be enough, as Moravian continued to pull away to secure the victory.

The Greyhounds had five different players score goals on the day, led by senior attacker Jillian Picciuto, who had an impressive six goals and six assists. In addition, junior attacker Liz Bill added five goals and one assist and passed the 200-career points mark.

As for Susquehanna, the River Hawks had seven different players find the back of the net. Defensively, the team was led by junior goalie Libby Dex who made 17 saves and picked up seven ground balls.

The River Hawks will return to action against Goucher College on Saturday, April 13 in Selinsgrove, Pa.
