The recent Bingo frenzy at Susquehanna University gave students multiple chances  to win something.

SLAC Bingo

On Monday, Oct. 5, from 6-8 p.m., SU’s Student Library Advisory Committee (SLAC) held a Banned Books Bingo in Charlie’s Lounge.

This Bingo was in honor of Banned Books Week, and seven winners won a book from the American Library Association’s 2025 most challenged books list.

Eowyn Thompson, president of SLAC, said: “My goal for Banned Book Bingo was to spread awareness about book banning and generate more excitement for SLAC. We held the event at the beginning of Banned Book Week so students would be more aware of the week itself as well as the plight affecting so many beloved books.”

Thompson said that students need to be informed to fight against censorship.

According to Thompson, SLAC is a small club wanting to introduce more people to what they do, and student participation is key.

Thompson said: “SLAC is the bridge between students and the library, meaning we cannot function according to our purpose if students don’t want to interact with us. They make hosting events worth it and help us continue doing what we love.”

According to Thompson, a book ban does not always mean a nationwide, all-out ban of a book, but it can simply be banned in public libraries or in school districts.

A book is first challenged, and if the challenge is successful, it is removed from the shelves of that institution.

Thompson said, “Books are often challenged because of swearing, sex, queer themes, etc. (there are so many different reasons), but usually it boils down to a desire to ‘protect the youth,’ which comes with various levels of good intentions and morals.”

P.S. I Love You

On Thursday, Oct. 8 at 7:30 p.m., the P.S. I Love You chapter at SU hosted Spooky Bingo in Charlie’s Lounge.

They had mocktails, slime, and several students won creepy-cool prizes to win including Halloween decorations, gift cards and shirts.

Sophia Ryan, their business manager, said, “P.S. I Love You held our annual spooky bingo as usual. It was a fun event to celebrate the Halloween season.”

Depop at Susquehanna

On Friday, Oct.9, from 5-6 p.m., the Susquehanna managers for Depop hosted Bingo Night in Charlie’s Lounge.

This Depop Bingo allowed students to sign up for Depop using their school email accounts, and nine winners won gift bags of Depop merch and other prizes.

According to Lanae Somes, their goal was to bring students together to win free Depop merchandise and emphasize the importance of circular fashion!

Lanae Somes said: “The student participation is a big aspect of our involvement at campus; we want to encourage students to resell clothing as well as buying thrifted clothing! We are trying to get people to sign up for Depop to have the opportunity to do just that!”

SAC

On Monday, Oct.12 from 4-6 p.m., SU’s Student Activities Committee (SAC) held Spooky Bingo in Charlie’s Lounge.

Several students won fun prizes such as a Jellycat, Lego sets, books and more.

According to Joel Perez Oliveras, president of SAC, SAC’s bingo goal was to bring students together to chat, have fun, and win free prizes in a “lowkey” environment.

According to him, even students who were on their way out the door stopped by to play when the event was confirmed to be bingo.

“I will say that having people participate and go helps get our name out there and to get better attendance. Once someone goes, they’ll bring their friends and are more likely to go to the other events, and their friends bring their friends, and so on and so forth.”

Oliveras said that SAC enjoys hearing from people who participate, and the input is utilized for future events.
