Susquehanna University has a star living on campus: singer-songwriter Ella Patterson.
Patterson, 19, is a sophomore Graphic Design major who composes and performs music in her spare time. Her most recent musical accomplishment was performing at Musikfest. On August 8 and 9, Patterson graced the stage with her original music.
Patterson expressed her appreciation for this opportunity: “Musikfest is an awesome music festival that gives young artists like me a place to share their music, and I feel very grateful I was given the opportunity to perform at it.”
While Patterson has performed for live audiences, she has also promoted her music on platforms such as YouTube, Instagram and TikTok since 2024. Patterson said she would also like to upload her songs to Spotify in the near future.
Patterson has written around 35 songs. She listed “Anything at All” as her favorite to play live. According to Patterson, its lyrics recount how liking someone can turn out to be disappointing. Despite its unhappy theme, shedescribed the song as upbeat.
In elementary school, Patterson began to explore the art of songwriting. She said her father, who was in an original band, inspired her to do so. However, it wasn’t until recent years that Patterson started writing music more seriously.
Patterson also sang and played instruments at an early age. “I’ve been singing for my entire life, whether it be in choir, theatre or through my own music,” she said. Patterson added that she has played the piano since she was nine.
Music is still an important part of Patterson’s life, but she must balance this passion with classes and soccer. According to Patterson, accumulating coursework and soccer season can make it difficult to find time for music.
Despite these commitments, Patterson keeps composing and performing songs while on campus. “I love being a part of a team and playing soccer; it is truly an amazing experience, but being able to express myself through music is a huge part of my identity, and I could not imagine my life without it,” she said.
Patterson said she wants music to be a part of her life in the future too. She shared her plans to write songs, share her music and see where this takes her. Patterson said, “I hope that I’ll be fortunate enough to continue to do something that brings me such joy.”
According to Patterson, she finds delight in communicating her feelings through song and wants listeners to connect with her lyrics.
Overall, Patterson’s musical journey has helped her grow as an individual. She said opening up emotionally has made her more secure: “Sharing something so personal with other people has helped me become more confident both as a musician and as a person.”
