Susquehanna Men’s Soccer took home a 2-1 win against Immaculata Saturday afternoon at Sassafras Field.
The match started with the River Hawks (2-4) finding the net early, as freshman defender Joe Holmwood converted a corner kick from freshmen midfielder Quinn Winslow in just the 15th minute of the game.
“It was a pretty easy finish, so I just had to execute,” said Holmwood about his goal.
Defense was strong for the rest of the first half, with Susquehanna leading 1-0. But Immaculata (0-6) answered early in the second half at the 52nd minute to tie the game 1-1.
But not much later at the 69th minute, junior midfielder Khalil McDonald scored his first goal of the season to move back in front 2-1.
The last 20 minutes of the game showed strong defense from the River Hawks as they were able to secure the 2-1 win.
“We were able to grind it out and get a good result. We had a rough couple of stretches of games in terms of results, so I’m glad to get on the front foot,” said McDonald.
Holmwood led the River Hawks with three shots on the day, one of them being on goal. McDonald took two shots with one shot on target. Winslow picked up the only assist of the day on the opening goal of the game.
“We have multiple corner plays. We change it up every game so that the team doesn’t know what we’re going to do,” Holmwood said about gameplans.
Sophomore goalkeepers Finn Kramer and Jason Krum both had time in goal, both sharing 45 minutes of play. Kramer played the first half and made two saves, while Krum let in the one goal, but finished strong with three saves in the second half to help get the win.
Susquehanna finished the day with 16 shots and seven on goal, where Immaculata put up 14 shots, 11 of them being in the second half.
The River Hawks will next hit the field on Tuesday, Sept 22 as they travel to Penn State Harrisburg for a 7 p.m. game.
