November is National Native American Heritage month, which means now is an important time to celebrate Indigenous people and rally support in their favor. In an effort to spread awareness, on Nov. 7, the SU chapter of It’s on Us will be hold their second Rock Against Rape Concert. In president Cyanea Sloan’s own words, the concert is, “focused on bringing awareness to the missing and murdered indigenous women, girls and two-spirited people epidemic.”
It’s On Us is a national organization that strives to end sexual violence across college campuses, and a fundamental part of their goal involves bringing awareness to the culture which promotes this behavior. It’s on Us strives to educate students on healthy relationships, consent and other important social issues.
Multiple artists, including Katy Nathan, Crapple Pie and more, will take the stage in Issac’s Auditorium from 7 to 10pm on Nov. 7. Tickets are $1 and will be sold from Nov. 3 to 7 in the lower part of the Degenstein Campus Center. Additionally, there will be a table featuring all of the Faceless Dolls that were made by students at It’s On Us’ earlier event entitled “The Faceless Doll Project.” Like the concert, this craft was meant to bring attention to the unheard voices of indigenous women, girls and two-spirited people.
All proceeds will be donated to the Indigenous Justice Circle (IJC), which according to Sloan, “is a Native-female-led organization that advances gender justice and fights the MMIWG2S epidemic through advocacy and partnerships.” The Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Two-Spirited People epidemic is rampant, and according to the National Institute of Justice, 84.3% of American Indian and Alaskan Native women have experienced violence against them in their lifetime, which is why supporting these people and spreading information is important.
It’s On Us would like to bring the Rock Against Rape Concert back every semester, so if you’re looking for something to do on campus, go enjoy the music, support your fellow music students and support a good cause.
