Frustration, controversy and close margins defined the Landmark Conference opener between the women’s soccer team and Scranton on Saturday.

The River Hawks fell 1-0 at Sassafras Field in what was a tough back-and-forth game. Susquehanna managed only three shots compared to Scranton’s fourteen.

In net, Katie Henchy did as much as she could to keep the River Hawks in the game, making six saves.

With only four minutes left before the halftime break, Royals forward Peyton DiLello pounced on a well floated cross from Libby Masterson bombing down on the left flank.

The River Hawks thought they had a goal in the 86th minute on a Morgan Stickley shot that SU believed had crossed the goal line after hitting the inside of the post. It was heavily debated and ultimately determined that there was no goal.

SU is now 5-5 on the season, having its three-game winning streak snapped in the loss. Scranton improves to 6-2-1 with the win.

The River Hawks will next be in action on Wednesday at Dickinson before traveling to Elizabethtown on Saturday to resume Landmark play.
