Susquehanna University brings an outstanding number of opportunities with their special-interest clubs and programs. One of these clubs is the Association for Women in Sports Media (AWSM, pronounced Awesome). AWSM is the primary sports media club of Susquehanna, and even though it is more driven for women in the sports media field, everyone on campus is welcome.
AWSM hosts meetings where they conduct workshops, bring on guest speakers and take field trips to help network and gain experience in the field. Most recently, AWSM hosted an interview with Philadelphia 76ers play-by-play announcer Kate Scott and was given a tour of Lincoln Financial Field, home of the Philadelphia Eagles.
Monday is the beginning of AWSM week. This is the second annual celebration and it will be celebrated with different events and activities throughout the week. Katrina Hook, a junior advertising & public relations major and the president of AWSM, helped put together the events and activities that will take place during AWSM week.
“It’s been a great year and I love the group of people we have this year… I think we evolved to something truly awesome,” she said.
Some of the events that will take place during AWSM week include an all-female broadcast of the women’s basketball game on Wednesday against Goucher. The Athletic Communications department helped collaborate with AWSM to make the second annual all women’s broadcast possible. The final day of AWSM week is Feb. 9, which is also Super Bowl Sunday. In recognition of this, AWSM will send out a form to everyone at SU with fun Super Bowl predictions. Correctly answering questions like the score of the big game and the length of the national anthem will grant the winner a special prize.
AWSM week is not only a week of activities and events, but it is also to commemorate all the women for their hard work in their field. When asked what AWSM means to her, Hook stated, “AWSM is a community… I never would have thought to pursue the future that I am working towards without AWSM”. The celebration starts on Monday with a collaborative movie night with SAC at 8:00 p.m. at Charlie’s.
