Christian Colasurdo has ice in his veins.
For the second week in a row, the junior Kicker booted a game-winning 32-yard field goal. This win punctuates a comeback 38-35 win over SUNY Cortland (2-1), ranked by D3football.com as the #10 team in the nation prior to Saturday’s contest at the Cortland Stadium Complex.
“I think it’s just a testament to his preparation and being ready to do his part,” said SU coach Tom Perkovich. “He’s a very talented kid.”
Just moments earlier, the game was tied on a one-handed catch by Kyle Howes in the left corner of the endzone. On the ensuing kickoff, the Cortland returner fumbled the ball, giving SU possession at the Cortland 31 with 1:30 to play after the recovery by Dominic Winn. He was named the Landmark Conference special teams player of the week for the recovery.
A few plays later, Colasurdo kicked his game-winner as time expired to put the #22 River Hawks at 3-0 on the year, following a season-opening blowout win at Bridgewater and a low-scoring comeback win at SUNY Brockport.
“No one nationally picked us to win that game,” Perkovich said. “We’ve been talking about proving people wrong. We’ve been able to prove those doubters wrong during the first three weeks.”
After three straight road games to begin the season, the River Hawks will finally return home on Saturday for another non-conference contest against Western New England. It will be the first time that the two schools will have met on the gridiron.
“I think it’s going to feel amazing (to be back home),” Perkovich said. “You know, get in front of the home crowd for the first time this year. I think that’s something hopefully we can feed off.”
Similarly, Colasurdo missed a 31-yard attempt early in the fourth quarter before his game-winner. Down by 14 points with 5:22 left to play in the game, it looked like the River Hawks were destined for their first loss of the season. Yet, three plays later, TE Rowen Hershey was standing in the endzone after catching a 12-yard TD pass from Josh Ehrlich.
