Quill Staff and Editorial Board Positions
Information and expectations for applicants
The following document outlines the roles available at The Quill along with the expectations for each role. Use this to consider which position(s) might be best for you.
Editorial Board
Editor in Chief
The EIC oversees all staff and editors. The EIC works closely with section editors to ensure clarity and focus in print and digital reporting.
Managing Editor of Content
The MEC oversees the editing of all content after it has passed through section editors. The MEC is also responsible for general concern over the assignments for staff writers and runs meetings if the Editor in Chief is unavailable.
Managing Editor of Design
The MED works to ensure each print copy of The Quill is up to proper standard and helps section editors layout their work in Adobe InDesign each week. The MED also helps run meetings and handles other administrative work to assist the Managing Editor of Content and the Editor in Chief.
News Section Editor
The News editor assigns articles of interest to staff writers on a weekly basis. The editor is responsible for keeping up with current issues and events on campus to keep the section timely. All section editors edit pieces and upload them to the website and to the print layout weekly.
Arts and Entertainment Section Editor
The A&E editor assigns articles about concerts, recitals, gallery openings and other events of interest to staff writers, and handles all submitted reviews. All section editors edit pieces and upload them to the website and to the print layout weekly.
Opinion Section Editor
The Opinion editor seeks out and accepts written contributions from the SU community to provide an outlet for appropriate opinion-based content. They also might assign staff writers certain topics. All section editors edit pieces and upload them to the website and to the print layout weekly.
Sports Section Editor
The Sports editor assigns articles concerning athletics event coverage and other sports-focused pieces. All section editors edit pieces and upload them to the website and to the print layout weekly.
Digital Editor(s)
Editor(s) of the Digital Team focus on the content published on The Quill’s social media channels and on general maintenance of The Quill’s website. This includes graphics, videos and the sharing of online article links to The Quill’s social media audience.
Photography Editor
The Photography editor is responsible for coordinating scheduling with Quill photographers to ensure there are photos from campus events and for every article that runs. The Photography editor works with section editors to learn what events and articles are happening.
Assistant Editors
As available, assistant editors work with section editors to divide responsibilities. Assistant editors may help with every part of the editing process and will likely also write for the section.
Advertising and Business Manager
The manager is responsible for selling advertisements, to be published in The Quill, to local businesses and campus departments. The manager needs to be outgoing and aware of the audience the outlet attracts to bring in advertising clients and business partnerships.
Staff
Staff Writers
Writers can choose one or multiple sections (News, Sports, Opinion or A&E) to write for on a weekly basis. Writers are responsible for properly covering the topic assigned to them. Training, examples and advice are available to every writer.
Staff Photographers
Photographers work with the editor to ensure as many events are covered as possible. They can also contribute to graphics work and other digital content. Photographers do not need to own a camera to work for The Quill.
Social Media & Digital
Staff members can also focus on helping the Digital Editor(s) with social media and website content creation. This may include social media posts, graphics creation and work on The Quill website.
Advertising and Business
The Quill also welcomes staff members to assist the Advertising and Business Manager with their responsibilities as the manager and Editor in Chief see fit.
