Pass-Fail Option Returns For Students

Posted on April 1, 2021February 10, 2025 by The Quill

With the chaos that was last spring semester, the pass-fail option saved my GPA from going down dramatically. The pass-fail option is a fail safe for when you are worried about how a certain grade will impact your GPA. If you get a D for example, you would still be able to get the credits you need for that class and move on to the next course.

I do not agree with everyone assuming they can just sign off on every class for pass-fail, because if you do better than you assumed, your GPA would not go up. This semester, I plan on filling out the form for the one class I am worried that I will get a low grade in.

I find it important that this is an option we have during the virtual courses. It is completely different than what it would be like when we are in a classroom. Although I have much experience from cyber school I always knew I never wanted to return to the virtual experience of the classroom. I do not learn as well as I do when I am able to be in the classroom.

I am not sure if the pass-fail option will return after this semester, considering we will be hoping to return in person completely for the upcoming semester. The university is very understanding that these past few semesters have been harder on us than any other, and they would not want the things we cannot control impact our degree. As much as most of us probably hope that it will continue to be an option, I am not sure that it would be.

For most of us, this option for the semester is a saving grace. I am very happy that they brought back this option since I have been so stressed over one of my classes. If anyone is worried about a certain class, I totally recommend looking into the pass-fail option. It is meant to help you rather than hurt you. Another reminder, do not decide to use this for every class because if you do then it could most certainly hurt you rather than help you.
