The Susquehanna women’s soccer team battled Misericordia to a 1-1 draw on Sept. 25 at Sassafras Field in Selinsgrove, Pa.

Susquehanna owned a 1-0 lead until halftime when a late penalty kick by Misericordia would tie the teams up.

In the first half, both teams would combine for nine shots. Sophomore forward Anna Werner picked up a slot pass from freshman mid elder Gillian Maack, which resulted in a goal fired past Misericordia junior goalie Alexis Benedetto. In the 73rd, minute Misericordia was awarded a penalty kick and junior mid elder Jordyn Martini found the back of the net and knotted up the score at 1-1.

Misericordia’s Benedetto saw a lot more action through- out the rest of the game from the River Hawks. Benedetto would come up with four saves, forcing the match to head into overtime.

The Cougars had two shots in the second frame, but Welliver turned away one with the other soaring over the goal.

“It’s important to get those saves in, especially in an overtime situation,” Welliver said.

Neither team was able to score in extra minutes, leaving the game at 1-1. This left the unbeaten streaks of both teams alive, as Susquehanna advanced to 5-2-1, while Misericordia sits at 4-2-2.

With their winning streak still intact, the River Hawks competed on the road against Landmark Conference rival Elizabethtown on Sept. 28, picking up a 1-0 win.

Sophomore forward Anna Werner scored her fifth goal of the season early on in the game, giving the River Hawks a 1-0 lead and ultimately making the difference in the conference match.

Welliver remained strong in the net for Susquehanna, putting up a season best six saves during the game and leaving the Blue Jays scoreless.

Improving to 6-2-1 on the season, Susquehanna will return to action at 4 p.m. on Oct. 5 when they take on conference foe Moravian at Sassafras Field in Selinsgrove, Pa. Moravian is currently 6-3 on the season thus far.
