Susquehanna’s Sigma Gamma Rho chapter hosted a Black Sitcom Night for the campus community on Sept. 17.
Sigma Gamma Rho is represented by President Jurnee Coker, Co-Vice Presidents Dasha Brown and Savannah Barton, and Public Relations Chair Diamond Marrow. All are part of the Class of 2023.
The sisters worked hard to put the night together, which took place in Issacs Auditorium in Seibert Hall. Marrow said it was easy setting up the event; according to her, the Office of Leadership and Engagement was pleasant to work with and they were able to offer food from Bella’s, a local pizzeria.
Black Sitcom Night featured episodes from shows that the sisters grew up watching. The list included “Martin,” “The Parkers,” “Moesha,” and “The Game.”
The goal of the event was for Sigma Gamma Rho to gain presence on campus. They are SU’s smallest sorority with only four members.
“It’s hard being at a PWI [Predominantly White Institution],” Coker said. “Our sorority is our home.”
Sitcoms were the preferred method of communication because they “helped us create our own culture and develop our own culture here,” Coker said. Both Marrow and Coker agreed that they have good memories associated with the shows they grew up on, and those shows helped them to connect with their peers.
As for their chapter, the sisters wanted to create a space where other women of color can feel comfortable on campus. Marrow expressed that “regardless of whether you’re in a sorority, we want to create events that feel like home.”
