Susquehanna Field Hockey defeated the Dickinson Red Devils 1-0 on Wednesday, Sept. 8 at Sassafras Field to bring them 3-0 on the season.
The first quarter went by without incident. Susquehanna controlled the ball in Dickinson’s zone, as they did for most of the game, but nothing came of the few opportunities Susquehanna had .
After the first quarter was completed, a storm rolled in and caused a ninety-minute delay. Players had to leave the field and wait to continue play until it was deemed safe.
“The delays definitely did not help us keep momentum,” said junior goaltender Mackenzie Bross, “We came out strong in the first quarter, but our legs took that second quarter to wake up again. The momentum comes from each individual on this team. The energy that our sideline keeps up all game helps all of us push towards the win.”
The River Hawks managed to fight through the second quarter without allowing Dickinson to get anything going, and in the third they appeared to have found their rhythm again.
They didn’t score but continued to control the ball offensively, getting some good looks on goal as well as a few short corners.
After creating pressure all game, the River Hawks finally broke through in the fourth with a goal from sophomore forward Ashley Scheffler, which was put in off a rebound. The River Hawk defense took them the rest of the way.
Bross continued her great start to the season, picking up her second shutout in just three games, and making a save. “My defense has been the key,” Bross said, “They have really done a great job at not letting the other teams have much opportunity to get shots off. I know that I can trust them, and they know that they can trust me.”
The Susquehanna defense only allowed one shot on goal all game, while they themselves recorded nine shots on goal, and forced seven short corners.
Susquehanna had more offensive production against Dickinson than they’ve had at any other point in the season. After garnering just four shots on goal total in the games against Salisbury and Christopher Newport to start the season, a game where the shots came easy was a welcomed sight for the River Hawks. It is only a matter of time before those opportunities begin to lead to more goals.
A game against Albright was scheduled for Saturday Sept. 11 as well, but was postponed until September 30, when the two will play on Sassafras field.
The River Hawks will look to build on their strong offensive showing and overall hot start to the season this coming Wednesday Sept. 15 at home against King’s College before traveling to Gettysburg on Saturday Sept. 18 to take on the Gettysburg Bullets for their first road game of the season.
