Welcome to The Quill, Susquehanna University’s student-led newspaper. We strive to publish student work that reports on the events taking place relevant to the campus community. We also serve as a forum by which community members can make announcements and express their opinions, a value articulated within our constitution. In order to achieve these means, The Quill endeavors to uphold the highest standards of journalistic integrity. We encourage cooperation, feedback, and student voices. To ensure this, all articles published in association with The Quill must abide by the formatting guidelines issued by the Associated Press Stylebook. Additionally, if you wish to work alongside our team of student editors, please reference our guidelines listed below:
- Articles must be written by Susquehanna University affiliated students. Each article must include the name of a verifiable Susquehanna student.
- All students who wish to publish an article must write a minimum of 350 words. For students who wish to see their article published in a printed edition of the newspaper, the article must be a minimum of 450 words.
- All articles must include at least two quotes. Sources may include students, staff, or faculty members, as well as any non-university affiliates who consent to an interview request. Depending on relation to the article, you also may use quoted research with cited sources.
- All articles must be submitted as a Word document to the appointed section editor.
- For reviews of a campus event, students must submit the article to the appointed section editor no later than three days after the event.
- For any articles that include corresponding photographs, the photographs must be submitted as a separate file, preferably a .JPEG or .PNG file. Each file must be labeled using the following format: Last name – Campus event name (i.e., Smith – Convocation).
- If an article includes research from external online sources, the writer should use a prepositional phrase to introduce the source in which information was taken from before quoting the information. Writers should also link the website to the prepositional phrase. See an example below:
- According to Purdue Owl’s Associated Press Style guidelines, “Use quotation marks around the titles of books, songs, television shows, computer games, poems, lectures, speeches and works of art.”
- All section editors who write an article for publication must send the document to the appropriate editor:
- All assistant editors must send the article to the appointed section editor.
- All section editors must send the document to the appointed assistant section editor for review. For any section without an appointed assistant editor, the document must be sent to the Editor-in-Chief or the Managing Editor of Digital Content for review.
- The Editor-in-Chief and/or the Managing Editor of Digital Content must submit all articles to the appointed section editor for review.
- All section editors must use the Track Change feature on Word for any edits to the original article. All edits will be approved by the Editor-in-Chief or the Managing Editor of Digital Content prior to publication.
