The women’s soccer team came up just short in a hard-fought battle against Haverford on Sunday afternoon at Sassafras Field in non-conference action, falling 1–0.
Senior Morgan Stickley and sophomore Gigi Duncan anchored the midfield throughout the match, but the standout performance came from sophomore goalkeeper Katie Henchy, who recorded seven saves to keep Susquehanna (0-2) within striking distance.
Haverford (1-1) struck early, with Katie Dowd netting the game’s lone goal in the 12th minute. The Fords controlled much of the first half, outshooting Susquehanna four-to-one by the break. Overall, Haverford finished with seven shots, seven corner kicks and one save, while the River Hawks tallied one shot, one corner and seven saves.
On the defensive end, SU sophomore Nicole Frieler impressed with several key tackles and forced turnovers that slowed Haverford’s attack.
The River Hawks will look to bounce back on the road in their next contest, facing Penn State Harrisburg on Wednesday night. The team will then return home at 1 p.m. Saturday to host Delaware Valley. Senior day festivities will be held in accordance with the game.
The River Hawks sit at 0-2 to start the year, losing by a combined three goals. One of those losses was to No. 7 Misericordia in the season opener. SU is hoping that tough competition will serve them well down the stretch.
