The women’s basketball team started Landmark Conference play off with a bang on Wednesday night, posting its highest scoring total of the young season.

The River Hawks earned a quickly-paced 90-69 battle over Goucher in the mid-week contest at Decker Sports & Recreation Center.

Senior guard Kenzie Selvaggi scored 24 points, while Sydney Weyant was just behind with a career-high scoring figure of 21. Annie Greek and Lauren Klein also helped pace the River Hawks (3-1 overall, 1-0 Landmark) with 13 and 9 points, respectively.

Goucher uses a high-tempo, lightning-fast system of playing referred to as “The System”, which was pioneered by David Arseneault at Grinnell College in the 1990s. Grinnell’s system promises constant pressing, lots of 3-point attempts and incredibly frequent substitutions. Grinnell’s men’s team still uses the system today, now ran by David Arsenault Jr.

Susquehanna is the first team all season long to hold the Gophers (4-1, 0-1), who were averaging 118 points per game entering play Wednesday, to under 90 points.

The women’s basketball team will continue Landmark Conference play at 2:00 p.m. Saturday when they travel to Bethlehem, Pa. to take on Moravian in the front end of a double-header with the men’s team. The Greyhound women are 1-2 to open the season after losing their Landmark opener 70-55 to Drew on Wednesday.
