This semester the Blough-Weis Library decided to ramp up their expectations for the student workers in order to make the positions held by students there more resume-worthy. As a current student manager and previous front desk assistant this opportunity couldn’t have come at a better time. Being that I am a second semester junior and will soon be filling out tons of resumes, having this job as something to add to my experience will be a huge help.
The library has two main jobs for students, one being that of a desk assistant and a student manager. The manager position differs from the assistant in that you log into the library’s LibCal page and answer student chats and assign study rooms for students if need be.
Otherwise the jobs are quite similar in their duties of checking books in and out, helping the staff keep things in order as well as helping out fellow students when looking for something. This semester though, the staff at the library wanted to help students out by adding some new work to our plate while sitting through our shifts in order for this position to look good on future resumes.
Students are now watching videos on how to properly catalogue books and place them back on the shelves. All students are now advised to look for loose books and movies that are in need of proper shelving and to put them back. We are also assigned videos to watch each week on how to shelve books, call numbers, etc.
Since the beginning of last year, the staff at the library have worked diligently with the Career Development Center (CDC) to make this job resume-worthy. As a result, there has been a slight change of pace for both desk workers and managers, but nothing that anyone of us hasn’t been able to handle. The CDC has deemed this on-campus job resume-worthy after students began logging more hours working hands on with the library itself.
If you’re looking for an on-campus job that not only has a great team surrounding you but is very light hearted and will look good on your resume, I highly recommend applying to work at the Blough-Weis Library. Applications will not open back up until the beginning of next semester, but be on the look out for this awesome opportunity!
