The investigation involving the sexual assault of a female student at 10:30 p.m. on Sept. 14 in Seibert Hall remains open.
The male assailant, who is not known at this time, was described to be a “college age white male with brown hair wearing khaki shorts” at the time of the assault, according to the SU Timely Warning Notifications.
On Sept. 18, another SU Timely Warning Notification was sent to the community stating: “The investigation remains open, however, many leads were generated in no small part by a number of students who provided valuable information to investigators.”
Susquehanna sends out these notifications in order to comply with the Federal Clery Act, that requires colleges with a public safety agency to inform students and faculty of sexual assaults and other crimes in a timely manner.
Angelo Martin, director of Public Safety, mentioned that even though he cannot go into detail about the case since it is still an ongoing investigation, he noticed that this is an event that has brought the community together to look after one another. “What is often lost is the power of the community,” Martin said.
He noticed within his past three years here as the director of Public Safety that the students here look out for one another, and when an incident takes place, students help each other by talking to Public Safety and giving information to them if they feel it will help make the campus a safer place for all.
The safety and security of the campus community remains a primary concern to the university. Martin also encourages students to reach out.
“When the whole community works together it’s super powerful,” he said.
When asked about the assailant and the possibility of them being an ongoing threat to the Susquehanna community, he stated that the assailant “knows now that the entire community is aware of who he is,” and the investigation remains open.
Martin expresses his appreciation and the importance of on campus, such as the VIP Center, located in the lower level of the Blough-Weis Library, and the work they do with bystander intervention, practicing consent and healthy relationships in the event of another incident.
If any students, faculty and staff have any information relevant to this case, they are encouraged to call the Department of Public Safety at 570-372-4444.
