Faculty Recital to Feature Sonatas

Posted on February 22, 2019 by The Quill

by Lauren Runkle, Contributing Writer

Adjunct Professor of Flute Leslie Cullen and Adjunct Faculty in Music Gary Boerckel will perform a faculty recital at 7:30 on Feb. 27 in Stretansky Concert Hall.

The two will perform a sonata by Paul Hindesmith and a sonata by Sergei Prokofiev.

Cullen said she has worked with Boerckel before and anticipates doing so again.

“Boerkel and I have collaborated many times over the last few years,” Cullen said. “He is always musically fabulous to work with, full of ideas and insights into the music.”

Cullen also praised Prokofiev’s sonata and emphasized the blend between the instruments.

“It is one of the most vivid, colorful pieces in the flute [and] piano duo repertoire, with great interplay between the instruments,” Cullen said. “It is ‘music as storytelling’ at its best.”

Cullen also said that she and Boerckel will discuss the background of the music at the performance.
