SGA Weekly with Victoria Durgin, Asst. Digital Media Editor
Students who have concerns and requests regarding dining services should reach out to staff, Director of Food Services Kevin Hamilton told the Student Government Association (SGA) on Oct. 29.
Hamilton spoke at the weekly SGA meeting and took questions to gain insight on how the student body felt about dining services.
Hamilton said food services is in the process of hiring a marketing coordinator to better promote its offerings and promotions. Additionally, food services has a staff shortage and is hiring students; as part of a student employment initiative, every student employee who works for 100 hours will be credited $25 extra Flex.
Hamilton said the staff looks at data taken from surveys when planning future menus, special events and other changes.
He encourages students to complete the surveys emailed out in order for the department to make decisions that best serve the student body.
He also told SGA that students should feel free to request service in areas when they feel it is lacking, such as in parts of the Hawk’s Nest during busy times.
“Don’t ever feel bad for asking for service,” Hamilton said.
The meeting also featured a moment of recognition of the shooting at a Pittsburgh synagogue and its impact on Susquehanna students. The interfaith and diversity liaisons spoke about the steps they want the campus to take in response.
In other business, an SGA town hall on recent changes made by several departments will take place on Nov. 14 in Degenstein Center Theater at 8 p.m. Details on the event, including who will be speaking at the town hall, will be emailed to students once finalized.
Changes are coming to the security staffing of the library during its 24-hour availability. In the past, SGA paid an outside security firm to be stationed in the library due to public safety staffing issues. This year, public safety officers will be in the library instead of guards from an outside company.
Next year marks the 10th anniversary of the creation and implementation of the core curriculum. Because of this, the curriculum committee can make changes or additions to the core requirements next year.
SGA will appoint students to the curriculum committee in the coming weeks. Information regarding nominations for all committees will be emailed to students in upcoming weeks.
The GO Office and its programs are hosting several events in the coming week. There is an information session on the GO Short program in Greece on Nov. 13 in Bogar Hall at 7 p.m. International Education week is Nov. 11 through 16. International groups will be tabling in lower Degenstein Campus Center and the GO office will host events in conjunction with the celebration of international education.
There will also be a Thanksgiving potluck on Nov. 16 at the GO office with international students and faculty. All students are welcome to attend and are asked to bring a food dish.
The Student Activities Committee (SAC) will host SU’s Got Talent at the end of November. A specific date and
details on auditioning for the show are forthcoming; all are welcome to audition. SAC will also host a comedian at Charlie’s in November.
The second SGA clean sweep event will take place on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. Any group of students with 10 or more people that participate in the event will be entered into a raffle for the chance to win $200 in gift cards.
SGA hopes to continue the Clean Sweep event, which aims to do community service for the area around campus through cleaning initiatives, every Sunday for the rest of the semester.
