Several university departments will be speaking at a town hall hosted by Student Government Association (SGA) on Nov. 14 according to information presented at the SGA meeting Monday night.
The town hall in Degenstein campus theater will include officials from Public Safety, the Counseling Center, the Department of Justice grant team, and the Center for Diversity and Inclusion.
SGA hopes the town hall will provide students with important information while also allowing them the chance to ask their questions to the different officials. Students will have the opportunity to hear changes made by the departments over the summer before the panel holds a question and answer segment.
SGA also discussed their new TIPS training initiative. SGA has allocated funding to provide the alcohol safety training course to 30 students each semester for the next two years.
The free training will be available on a first come, first served basis beginning this fall. Information about signing up for the training will be emailed to students once training dates have been finalized.
SGA hopes the training will also offer the opportunity to educate students about alcohol-related procedures on campus. According to university handbooks, five TIPS trained individuals must be present at every event which serves or allows alcohol.
SGA hopes funding training for members will to increase the likelihood of properly trained students being present at events.
On Sunday Oct. 28 SGA is hosting the first “Clean Sweep” event. The Clean Sweep events are intended to engage the Susquehanna community with the Selinsgrove community through clean-up projects both within and outside of campus.
The event on Oct. 28 will begin on campus and then branch to include surrounding streets. All are welcome to attend the event on Sunday; SGA also plans to host a Clean Sweep every Sunday for the remainder of the semester.
The form needed to sign up to volunteer at the event was emailed to every student.
Several pieces of information were shared in individual liaison reports as well. The Admissions Dept. is hosting admitted students on Nov. 9 and 16; the students will eat in the dining hall on those days. The Facilities Dept. is considering replacing smoke and carbon dioxide detectors in 18th Street dorms this summer. They will also soon begin testing 100 percent recyclable mattresses in the Sustainability house.
In other housing news, the Residence Life office will host information sessions on the changes made to the housing selection process. These sessions will likely take place in late November and early December. More information on the sessions will be made available when plans have been finalized.
Free passport and visa photos will be available for students in the GO Office every Wednesday from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Applications for 2019 GO programs are open until Nov. 15. Students can look at program options and apply on the GO website.
SGA will also be voting on student appointments to several committees on campus. They will be sending out information regarding nominations for positions on committee boards that require student involvement.
The committees include areas such as the central curriculum, admissions, arts events and programming, athletics, religious life; student life, the University council, sustainability and teaching and learning spaces.
Students will be able to nominate themselves when forms are emailed to the student body in the coming weeks.
SGA meets at 7 p.m. on Mondays in Seibert Hall Room 108, all students are welcome.
