On September 16, country music duo Dan + Shay came to Susquehanna to perform for the Fall Concert sponsored by the Student Activities Committee.
On the days before the concert, the Student Activities Committee organized and managed the set-up of the venue in which the duo would perform. The effort spanned not just the committee, but also utilized students from all over campus
Ryan Carter, a junior, was one of the students to help set up the venue for the concert.
“I felt that it was a great way to give back to the SAC and the school who go through all the effort to provide these events for our enjoyment,” said Carter.
“I’m happy to do any amount of service to show the school that their efforts do not go unnoticed.”
Junior Ellie Mummert said, “The fall concert is something that SU students look forward to every year.”
Students have looked forward to the duo’s performance since it was revealed two weeks prior. Dan + Shay is one of the only country music groups that has been asked to perform at Susquehanna in the past few years.
“It is awesome that our school provides us the opportunity to at- tend concerts for free,” explained junior Clarissa Woomer, “I was super excited to see Dan + Shay in person, and I was not disappointed—the duo performed with great energy that was perfect for a college campus.”
Dan + Shay have extensive experience in the country music scene, having performed at The Grand Ole Opry in 2014, as well as grabbing opening spots for a couple of popular country musicians like Blake Shelton and Hunter Hayes.
“Dan and Shay were incredible. I would say they were the best performers we had in a while,” said Mummert.
The duo had a set list that contained their most popular songs, including their debut single “19 You + Me”.
This song was the hit that got the duo their initial exposure in the country music scene, and their first song to get played on the radio.
They also performed songs from their most recent album, “Obsessed”, as well as covers of hits from other genres that everyone could enjoy.
The country musician Devin Dawson has been on tour with Dan + Shay. Dawson is a member of the same label as Dan + Shay, Warner Brothers’ Music, and has released four singles under this label. He performed them all for the concert attendees.
“Although I [had] not herd of Devin Dawson before the concert, he put on a great show,” said Woomer.
He is an up and coming artist in the country music scene and his ability to perform for this many students will definitely help his exposure.
The concert showcased two artists that are representing modern country music to a student body that hasn’t had access to concerts in this genre on campus previously.
“SAC does an amazing job putting [concerts] on and bringing a variety of artists to our campus,” said Mummert.
