SU’s February Org Summit welcomes three unique clubs to campus

Susquehanna’s Student Government Association (SGA) held its quarterly Organizational Summit (Org Summit) meeting at Isaac’s Auditorium on Wednesday, Feb. 18.

At the meeting, three aspiring clubs presented their mission statements and details on what each club entails. Kyra Keena, this semester’s president for SGA, and Olivia Ormsby, SGA’s executive parliamentarian, announced each club.

If you’ve ever had an interest in sewing or designing clothes, this first presentation may be for you! The Sewing and Design club was presented by President Raphael Wolf, Vice President Daniel Mitchell and Treasurer Brandon McPhillips.

They have a mission to create love for design through teaching sewing, presenting original designs in a showcase and promoting sustainable fashion. To achieve this, the executive board emphasized restoring old clothes, like clothes that don’t fit or just aren’t your style anymore and turning them into something new.

Meetings will include basic sewing lessons, an introduction to using a sewing machine, as well as inspiration nights where you can dive into a specific style or colors. Anyone can participate! You’ll also learn about different fabric types, pattern tracing and so much more.

Keep a lookout for postings on club meetings and other events on Campus Groups and around campus.

Next is a new chapter on Susquehanna’s campus. The Young Democratic Socialists of America (YDSA), with Co-Presidents Lemon Akhtar and Sophia Lozada-Delzell on the stage alongside Vice Chair, Echo Yordy and Secretary, Jaidyn Steinbrecher.

Their mission is “to educate and organize students and young people and to play a helpful and principled role in the movement for social justice.” They hope to “…articulate and defend the idea that true human liberation is impossible under capitalism.” They stated that their vision of socialism is democratic, anti-racist and feministic.

They plan to do this by educating Susquehanna’s student body on important issues, as well as raising awareness of concerns in the community, all in a productive manner. Events such as trivia, guest speakers and protests are also something you could find in the foreseeable future.

YDSA will hold meetings every Thursday evening from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. in Steele Hall, room 219. Meetings will include discussions and lessons relevant to Democratic Socialism. The club does come with a membership fee, as it is a national chapter. The fee dues are only $20 a year and can be waived under certain circumstances!

Last up was the Filipino Heritage Association, with a mission to spread Filipino culture, history and traditions through education and cultural events. As well as creating a safe and supportive space for students who are Filipino or interested in Filipino culture.

On stage were President Jyn Seabrook, Vice President Se’anie Rios, Secretary Brayden Sanfelice and Public Relations Officer Rovic Merginio. To achieve this goal, the Filipino Heritage Association plans on holding cultural nights full of Filipino food, music and dances.

Keep an eye out for postings of meetings and cultural events around campus and online.
