After losing the last two non-conference games, the women’s basketball team looked ahead to the Landmark conference play.
It was apparent that the players cleared their minds from those two losses as they came out and dominated Goucher 109-60 at Orlando W. Houtz Gymnasium on Nov.29.
This was the first 100-point effort in almost 25 years. The team had not scored that many points since 1999. Carly George led the way for the River Hawks as she scored a career-high 20 points and added nine rebounds. The most impressive part about her performance was that she scored all these points in the first half.
Here is what she had to say about her and the team’s performance, “I just have to thank my teammates for giving me the open looks to score this many points. I think that this effort gave us so much confidence for the rest of the conference play. Now we just have to keep the same confident mindset going into every game.”
Along with George, five other River Hawks scored in double figures to lead this balanced attack and ultimate team effort. They shot over 50% for the whole game and went 14-15 from the line which is the main reason that they kept their foot on the gas the entirety of the game. This put the River Hawks at 3-2 overall and 1-0 in conference.
They took the momentum into another home bout on Saturday, Dec. 2 as they used a hot start to beat Moravian 62-42.
The River Hawks outscored the Greyhounds 17-4 in the first quarter and took a 34-14 lead into the half. Roth, Lynch, and Selvaggi all scored in double figures to lead the way on Saturday. Julia Roth had a double– double as she scored 18 points and 20 rebounds. Kenzie Selvaggi added 13 points on three three-pointers. This was back-to-back double-digit performances. Kaitlyn Lynch added 10 points and two steals in a very balanced performance.
After the game, Selvaggi commented, “I feel like we have really hit our stride in the past two games. Something just clicked in that Goucher game for us, and it feels great to know we are all playing with confidence right now. The real test comes Wednesday though as we travel to a ranked Catholic.”
This win put the Riverhawks at 4-2 on the young season and 2-0 in conference play. This was a very important win for the ladies as Moravian beat them twice last year.
On Wednesday, Dec. 6, the teams undefeated conference record came to an end as they played a very talented Catholic team. They ended up losing 73-51 but the score was misleading.
Susquehanna cut the Catholic lead down to four in the third quarter but could not get over the hump and take the lead. Julia Roth led the team with 25 points and eight rebounds; her second straight game leading the team in scoring. A very promising start for the sophomore forward.
The team looks to get back on track Saturday as it heads to Elizabethtown, another ranked team, looking to make a statement in an important conference game.
