An early own goal by the River Hawk soccer team led to its demise in the season opener against Misericordia.
The beginning of the campaign for the River Hawks (0-1) did not go exactly as they hoped on Friday night at Sassafras Fields Complex. Misericordia (1-0), who finished 11-3-5 last year, posed a tough non-conference challenge for SU.
They came out of the gates hot and put pressure on the Susquehanna defense immediately, which led to a goal for the Cougars by a Susquehanna defender off a deflection.
The story of the game was simply that Misericordia capitalized on their timely opportunities and never let Susquehanna get the momentum. The River Hawks also had chances of their own, but Friday was just not their night.
Misericordia doubled Susquehanna on shots (10-5) and had six more corners, which led to the final score of 3-0. Luckily, it was only the first game of the season, and the River Hawks had time to adjust.
