A senior’s take on the career fair

On October 6th, I attended the career fair that was held in Degenstein. I was excited to see what businesses would attend (not to mention the free goodies they provide) and what career opportunities would be presented before me. I have high hopes every year for the career fair, and being a senior means that I need to start seriously looking for a job once I graduate.

After going, I have to say I was disappointed with the turnout of employers this year. Almost every single stand was looking for students majoring in communications, accounting, or finance. As a writing major, it’s a bit disheartening to not see any opportunities for me at the fair, especially since the writing department boasts of having alumni in publishing positions.

There must have been less than twenty attending employers and out of those, only two offered a potential job or internship for my major. Even then, I had to “stretch the truth” for my skills. Those who were interested in me wanted someone who was involved in marketing or public relations, something I have very little knowledge about.

Is the selection of employers just what was convenient at the time, or is Susquehanna purposefully catering towards communication majors the most? If I can’t see more diversity during the career fair, I at least want honesty in what positions are being offered.
