BETHLEHEM, Pa., October 1
Susquehanna women’s soccer continued their winning run, as well as their run of clean sheets, extending each of them to six as they beat Moravian away in Landmark action on Saturday.
The River Hawks came out of the gate with energy, and the in-form Delaney Morton was denied just six minutes in by Moravian keeper Payce Korpics. Emily Wertz had a shot saved after 24 minutes.
It was Morton who gave the River Hawks the advantage, the breakthrough goal coming right on the half-hour mark. After what looked like pinball in the Moravian penalty area, a chance came for the junior to fire in the opener. The River Hawks were strong throughout and needed a solitary save from Paisley Tornatore, the first-year goalkeeper picking up her fifth clean sheet of the season.
The visiting River Hawks did not take long to double their lead, scoring a second just seven minutes into the second half. The goal came when senior midfielder Gillian Maack burst into the penalty area and hammered a right-footed shot past Korpics. She moves level with Emily Wertz and Mikela Florio on four goals this season, top of the charts for Susquehanna. The River Hawks had two more shots on goal, both coming from set-pieces, with Cierra Getz and Marley Clendenin saving shots at 59 and 62 minutes, respectively. Neither side had a shot on target for the remaining 28 minutes, as Susquehanna was able to shut the door on the Greyhounds and claim a sixth consecutive win and clean sheet in the process.
The River Hawks have moved into the regional rankings, and they continue to make their case for consideration in the national rankings with an impressive winning run. To extend their run further, it will take a win at Penn College on Wednesday, and then two more away Landmark clashes at Goucher and then Juniata before they return home on fall break weekend, hosting Catholic at Sassafras Field.
