Sunday afternoon at Sassafras field, the Riverhawk women’s soccer team hosted the Delaware Valley Aggies for a non-conference matchup.
The River hawks banged in eight goals, two of which came within the first seven minutes of the match.
Marley Sprenkel and Emily Wertz scored the early goals for the Riverhawks.
Despite the blowout loss, the star of the game was without a doubt Delaware Valley goalkeeper Olivia Sherwood. Sherwood was called upon early and often, stopping attempt-after-attempt with incredible acrobatic saves.
11th-year River hawk head coach Nick Hoover went up to Sherwood after the game to praise her. “She’s one of the best goalkeepers I have ever seen at this level.”
First-year players were also at the forefront of the contest, with the rookies scoring four out of eight goals for the Riverhawks. Kameron Watkins earned herself a double, while Caitlyn Sanchez and Sydney Williams each netted their first collegiate goals.
“We had some really good performances, especially by our first-year players,” said Hoover.
Sprenkel also netted a second goal, and Mikela Floria rounded out the scoring for Susquehanna.
Senior ‘keeper Carlie Marquette was given her first start of the year in-between the sticks. She played most of the game, keeping a clean sheet while she was on the pitch. Jess Williamson scored for the Aggies in the dying moments of the contest after Marquette was substituted.
The River hawks have a busy week ahead of them. They’ll host Dickinson on Wednesday for another non-conference matchup before heading to Virginia for the weekend. While in the Old Dominion, they’ll play Christopher Newport, the #1 ranked team in the nation.
