Mental Health Days Provide Relief For Students

With the semester being as crazy and different than most spring semesters students have been through, the campus decided to add more off days in hopes of supporting mental health. With much needed randomized days off every month, they hoped that the students had the time they needed to regain their footing and keep moving forward in their classes.

I have many mixed feelings about these designated mental health days, especially since most of them I spent doing homework rather than taking a break. Hearing some classmates talk about it, I have heard many of the same stories, all of them having to spend the day doing homework, studying for tests, or other projects rather than using the time without classes to relax. 

The most recent mental health day was two days rather than one, and in my opinion, it was the best one we have had since I was able to take a break. With it being more than one day, I was able to catch up on any work I had to get done and take the time to relax as the campus had encouraged us to do. I know with the course schedule, it may be hard to designate more than one day off every month, but I think it would be the best option when it comes to hoping students have time to relax rather than work on coursework.

There were many times when my professors would forget we had a mental health day and assign work for those days, only remembering that we were supposed to have a break that day after I already submitted the assignment. Sure, it was nice to be ahead of schedule when they pushed the due date back, but the time that I spent working on that I could have been actually taking a break.
