The Susquehanna women’s lacrosse team faced Elizabethtown in their first Landmark Conference contest, defeating the Blue Jays 17-13 on March 27.
Elizabethtown had already played three games. Coming into the game Susquehanna was 0-0 and Elizabethtown was 0-2.
In the match up, the first goal was scored by Elizabethtown 25:59 minutes left in the first half of the game. However, just seconds after Elizabethtown’s goal Susquehanna came back with a goal by freshman attacker Heather Riefenhauser and was assisted by freshman midfielder Madi Mitchell.
A few minutes later, Elizabethtown picked up an unassisted goal, giving the Blue Jays a 2-1 lead..
After trailing for the first few minutes of the game, the River Hawks were able to score two back-to-back goals putting themselves ahead of the Blue Jays 3-2. With just 12:52 left in the first half Susquehanna was leading Elizabethtown 7-5. Going into half the score was 11-8 with Susquehanna in the lead.
Going into the second half junior attacker Caroline Chase was leading the team with four goals and one assist. The other goal scorers for Susuqhanna were senior attacker Nicole Hauck, freshman midfielder Kelsey Homberg, Riefenhauser, freshman midfielder Caitlin Harvey, and Mitchell.
“I think what was working well for our team was the way we were communicating and we connected on our passes very well during the game,” Riefenhauser said.
In the second half the goals were at more of a premium then they were in the first half. Susquehanna kept their lead throughout the game. The River Hawks scored six goals in the second half with a final score of 17-13.
Chase had five goals, Riefenhauser had four goals, Hauck had three goals, Katie Hoerman had two goals and Mitchell, Harvey and Homberg all scored one goal each giving Susquehanna their win over Elizabethtown.
Riefenhauser said: “I was able to make some good cuts towards the net and my teammates were able to find me.”
Not only did Chase score five goals, but she also had three assists. Freshman goalkeeper Bea Daudelin also made her collegiate debut against Elizabethtown making 13 saves for Susquehanna.
“It felt awesome to be able to win the first game of my college career and play in our first conference game,” Daudelin said. “I was really happy with how the team played together and was super happy for all my teammates and how well they all played.”
