Sports are back in town! On March 13 Susquehanna’s  men’s soccer team played against Catholic University at Sassafras Field in Selinsgrove, Pa, losing 3-0. This was the first time in over a year since the River Hawks have played in a competitive game due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The three goals were scored by Cardinals’ midfielder Nelson Zimmerman, forward Ben Alexander and midfielder Nate Perrins. Five minutes into the start of the game, the Cardinals scored a goal, finding the back of the net off a header. With 12 minutes left in the first half, Catholic thought they scored, but it ended up being called  offsides.

In the beginning of the second half, the River Hawks kept the ball moving positively but were unable to find the back of the net. With nine minutes left in the second half, the Cardinals had a lot of momentum going, were given a penalty and the ball found its way to the back of the net to make the game 2-0. A few minutes later, with six and a half minutes left in the game, the Cardinals scored another goal, from the edge of the 18-yard box, making the score 3-0.

Susquehanna’s senior midfielder, Kyle Trainor, said: “Going into the game we knew they were a tough team and certainly a challenge for our first game in two years with a new roster. The mindset before the game was to go out there and give it our all and play the way we know how to play.”

“It was great to be back on the field and play with our team. Although today didn’t go our way we have two more games to prove what this team is capable of,” Trainor continued.

The next time the River Hawks hit the field will be March 21 against Elizabethtown College at 4 p.m. on Sassafras Field.
