Lingering Fears of Studying Abroad

Posted on September 27, 2020February 10, 2025 by The Quill

The current pandemic has put a lot of things on hold for college students around the world. University travel has mostly come to a halt. Some students at Susquehanna, however, are still preparing for their abroad trips.

As of now, senior Sam Brumagin’s GO trip group is still preparing to leave the United States this winter.

Brumagin’s GO trip is the Sherpa Life and Culture in Nepal, most of the trip is based around hiking to the Mount Everest base camp.

With COVID-19 still making its way through multiple countries, and the U.S.continually implementing new precautions, Brumagin has some concerns regarding her trip.

“I am nervous to get there and not be able to come home or to get sick there and have to quarantine in a foreign country for 14 days,” Brumagin said.

The U.S. has e had varying travel restrictions due to the virus. If another outbreak were to hit or if the current outbreak were to get worse, they may prohibit incoming flights from foreign countries.

Brumagin’s travel group is made up of very few students who will live in close quarters. If one were to get sick it is likely to spread.

A concern has also been raised about the safety of traveling to a foreign country.

“I am concerned for students who feel unsafe traveling,” Brumagin said, “It puts them in a position where they have to try and fight for accommodations.”

The fears of traveling abroad have grown over the past couple of months, and for those that still plan to do so I sincerely hope you stay safe and get to live out this once in a lifetime experience.
