The Susquehanna men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams hosted Drew University on Nov. 16 to open up conference competition for the River Hawks in the 2019-2020 season.
The women’s swimming and diving team picked up their first win in the young season by a narrow 113-108 score over the Drew women’s team.
The men’s team ultimately fell to Drew in a 132-88 defeat, dropping their third straight meet to open the season. Drew snagged their first conference win in their victory over Susquehanna.
Freshman Jayden Corrigan lead the way for the men’s team, claiming the overall victory in the 1,000 freestyle in 10:23.53 and the 500 freestyle in 4:59.75. Both times marked the best for the River Hawks in these events throughout the season thus far.
The 200-yard freestyle relay was won by the team of sophomore Conor McManus, sophomore Carter Niness, freshman Jack Umburgia and Corrigan with a time of 1:32:59. The leading medley relay team for Susquehanna of senior Shane Sullivan, freshman Andre Fissella, sophomore Eric Towse and senior David Grove placed second in the event in 1:39.
Towse also took the overall victory in the 200 backstroke event in 1:55.33, while also snagging third in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:49.85 for a successful afternoon.
Sullivan lead the way in a podium sweep of the 200 breaststroke in 2:16.98, followed by Fissella in 2:17.56 and Bova in 2:22.35.
The Susquehanna women’s team fought a tight matchup all of Saturday, with the lead being swapped between the two sides six times throughout the event. Susquehanna ended the day with a victory of 113-108 over Drew to score the program’s first victory in the Landmark Conference opener.
The 200-yard medley relay saw Susquehanna take the top two spots, with the team of freshman Julia Adams, freshman Haley Muth, sophomore Sabrina Krotzer and junior Tori Weems finishing in 1:54.80 to win the event, while the freestyle medley team of Krotzer, Adams, junior Olivia Fravel and senior Megan Shaffer placed second in 1:44.86.
Susquehanna swept the podium in the 200 breaststroke, as Muth lead the way in 2:33.28. She was followed by sophomore Paige Swartz in 2:37.17 and sophomore Tara Caucino in 2:42.55.
Muth also led the River Hawks in the 200 individual medley, finishing second with a time of 2:16.36.
Fravel also impressed in the 50 freestyle, placing second in 26:45.
Senior Caitlin Kelly was second in the 1,000 freestyle with a time of 11:17.30, also snagging second in the 500 freestyle in 5:28.55.
In diving, senior Kelly Weins was first overall in the 1-meter dive with a score of 208.65 followed by junior Alex Ferris in second with a score of 11.95.
Both programs continue their season on Nov. 23 in Scranton, Pa. at the Marywood Diving Invite, followed by a meet on Dec. 6-7 at the Gettysburg Invitational meet in Gettysburg, Pa.
