During their Pink Out game to raise awareness in the fight against breast cancer on Oct. 16, the Susquehanna women’s soccer team picked up a 2-0 victory over Landmark conference rival Juniata College at Sassafras Field in Selinsgrove, Pa.
With both goals coming in the second half, the River Hawks faced a challenge from Juniata’s freshman goalie Cati Besch, who stalled the River Hawks’ scoring with five saves during the first half.
Not long after half time, sophomore forward Anna Werner would score her team leading 10th goal to break the tie and give the River Hawks a 1-0 lead. The goal was scored off of an assist from senior midfielder Alee Pettit. Werner placed the ball just above Besch’s head and into the back of the net.
In the 76th minute, Werner assisted sophomore midfielder Casey Grehan’s game settling goal.
“We knew we were coming off a tough conference loss,” Grehan said. “This win was a total team effort the full 90 minutes.”
“My goal came out of pure determination to put one away, could not have done that without my teammates and the support around me,” Grehan said.
Junior goalie Madi Welliver was also a highlighted player, obtaining her sixth shutout of the season and needed no saves during the matchup.
Following the win over Juniata, the River Hawks took on Goucher on Oct. 19 at home, winning 3-0.
The River Hawks’ first goal came from freshman midfielder Gillian Maack. After Maack found the back of the net heading in the ball to put them up 1-0, Susquehanna quickly struck again. Thirty minutes into the game, Werner scored to put the River Hawks up 2-0.
“Being up two goals before half is always safe,” Werner said. “Being a part of those goals is always great too.”
After halftime, sophomore forward Sam Chillis scored the River Hawks’ last goal of the contest, firing a shot past Moravian’s Christina Charikofsy. With this goal making the score 3-0, the River Hawks had done enough to seal the deal.
The River Hawks will next take on Scranton in another Landmark Conference contest at 4 p.m. on Oct. 26 on the road in Scranton, Pa.
