Susquehanna’s radio station 88.9 WQSU The Pulse celebrates National College Radio Day and WQSU day on Oct. 4. The celebration kicked off with the proclamation of the Snyder County Commissioners saying that Oct. 4 is WQSU day.
The Snyder County Commissioners signed a Snyder County resolution-2019-16 that officially proclaims that Oct. 4 is WQSU 88.9 day in Snyder County, Pa.
Senior Carly Rogers, music director for WQSU, expressed her gratitude in regards to this proclamation.
“We work really hard here,” she said. “We keep our listeners happy, our students happy.”
Back in February 2019, The Pulse won a Pennsylvania Association of Broadcasters (PAB) Excellence in Broadcasting award. WQSU is the only college radio station in the state of Pennsylvania to do so.
A month after, 88.9 brought home four Intercollegeiate Broadcasting System (IBS)Awards for Best College Radio Station, Best On-Air Pledge Drive, Best Station Facilities and Best Use of Facebook. Rogers said that she is grateful for the recognition that those at WQSU get for the hard work everyone put into the station and making sure that WQSU remains the best college radio station in Pennsylvania.
Other members of WQSU are nothing but proud of how far Susquehanna’s radio station has come along within the past few years.
Senior and promotions director Jordan Jansson has been a part of WQSU long enough to watch the station grow since she her first year here in 2016.
“We’re the biggest club on campus,” she explained, “and having the town and Snyder County recognize our accomplishments and how much we give to this community is really an incredible feeling and to know we’re giving back to a community that does so much for us is really wonderful.”
Dawn Benfer, general manager of WQSU, talked about how honored the WQSU staff is for this proclamation given to them by the Snyder County Commissioners.
“This is huge because it is not every day that the Snyder County Commissioners do a resolution that is numbered. So, they hold this, this is a very high, very privileged recognition that we’re getting recognized by the commissioners for all the great accomplishments that the students at WQSU have been doing.”
Jansson thinks that WQSU is growing as a station.
“We have a really great chance to grow on this campus and become a really big impact for a lot of organizations and to build student’s skills when they go into their future careers in broadcasting,” she said.
This is a big deal for WQSU, and things can only go up from here. Benfer said that she can see the radio station expanding along with the industry.
Most importantly, Benfer said she is most excited about the students.
Benfer said she sees them “doing bigger and better things… they’re going to be trying new things. Some of those new things will not succeed right away. But they’re going to pick themselves up by the bootstraps and they’re going to figure out what went wrong and they’re going to keep trying things to make them a better person and to make the station better as well.”
Snyder County Commissioner Peggy Chamberlain Roup will make a guest appearance at Susquehanna’s college radio station on Oct. 4 to present the official proclamation to the WQSU staff.
