Susquehanna men’s soccer team secured a 1-0 win after going into double overtime on the road against Alvernia on Oct. 26 in Reading, Pa.
Junior defender Scott Mission was able to score 84 seconds into the second period of overtime which brought the team out of a five-game losing streak.
Susquehanna had the upper hand by leading 5-4 with shots on goal in the first half. Alvernia came out hot in the second half, however, tallying a 6-5 lead with shots on goal. Both teams stood even on the score board after the second half, bringing the match into overtime.
In the very beginning of the second period of overtime, the ball was quickly sent up the sideline and then passed to into the box where Mission ultimately found the back of the net.
“This perfect service was connected to center back Scott Mission who was able to find the top corner of the net finishing the game in golden goal fashion,” junior forward Aaron Skelly said.
Following their win against Alvernia, the Susquehanna men’s soccer team came up short 1-0 against Elizabethtown College.
The Blue Jays secured a 1-0 lead late in the first half after senior forward JD Haaf scored on a penalty kick.
The River Hawks owned a 2-0 margin in corner kicks heading into half time, how- ever, the Blue Jays led 3-2 in shots as the first half ended.
At the 80-minute mark, junior defender Eli Perry of Elizabethtown placed the ball in the back of the net, scoring the second goal of the match and his first goal of the season.
Susquehanna was able to cut the deficit in half when junior defender Pat Bresney assisted sophomore forward Edward Lynch.
Elizabethtown countered the River Hawks goal a minute and 20 seconds later when Haaf scored his fifth goal of the season and sealed the win for his team with only minutes left in the game.
“We outplayed Elizabethtown in every category but unfortunately we could not find the net,” Mission said. “They capitalized on their opportunities unlike us.”
The River Hawks will return to action at 1 p.m. on Oct. 5 against Moravian at home.
