Moores tops the scoreboard at Penn State Altoona Invitational

Sophomore Ella Moores finished first among all golfers as the women’s golf team competed in the Penn State Altoona Invitational on Sept. 21 at the Sinking Valley Country Club in Altoona, Pa.

Competing against an excellent regional field of golfers, Moores shot a field-leading 87 on the day, which led all golfers by three strokes. This was Moores’ and Susquehanna’s first win of the season. Senior Kira Hunter placed in the middle of the pack on Saturday, posting a 109 on the day.

While Sinking Valley reminds many golfers of a nature preserve rather than a golf course, Moores and Hunter had to deal with a lengthy course that featured numerous water hazards, as well as plenty of bunker surrounding the bent-grass greens.

Sinking Valley is known as a jewel in the middle of Pennsylvania and Moores certainly put the course to the test this weekend.

Following the Penn State Altoona Invitational, Susquehanna also competed in the Mount Aloysius Invitational on Sept. 22 with Moores and Hunter once again leading the way for the River Hawks. The event was held at Summit Country Club in Cresson, Pa.

Moores fired another score of 87 and placed third in the event behind only Sydney Ball of St. Vincent College and Courtney Link of Mount Aloysius College. Hunter placed 11th among all golfers, shooting a 107 on Sunday.

Originally a nine-hole course, the Summit Country Club plays as a course that prides itself on the character of its greens. Summit features plenty of elevation changes and numerous blind shots that gave Susquehanna plenty of trouble on Sunday.

Susquehanna women’s golf will continue their fall season with a trip to the Landmark Conference Fall Preview, which will be held on Oct.19 at the Queenstown Harbor Golf Club in Queenstown, Md
