The Susquehanna women’s soccer team scored a 3-0 win over King’s College on Sept. 11 at Sassafras Field in Selinsgrove, Pa.
The game was scoreless going into halftime despite Susquehanna attempting 14 shots, but the tide turned after the half for the River Hawks as senior midfielder Alee Pettit was assisted by sophomore forward Anna Werner, scoring the team’s first goal in the 53rd minute.
Pettit scored with the ball going into the lower right-hand corner of the goal to get the team on the scoreboard.
The momentum invigorated the team, as scoring continued with a goal into the top left corner by junior forward Kate Ross. Ross’ low angle shot came from outside of the right side of the box to bring the score to 2-0.
Sophomore midfielder Casey Grehan was then assisted by junior forward Kathryn Perlowitz, as she shot a header off of a free kick to give the River Hawks their third goal at the 73rd minute, building the lead to 3-0.
These were the first goals of the season for Pettit, Ross and Grehan.
“The team’s first focus or goal was to learn each other’s strengths and weaknesses, enabling us to work well and connect on the eld,” Pettit said. “This will lead us to have a winning record and bring us back to the Landmark Conference Championships.”
The Monarchs fought hard for 90 minutes but the Susquehanna defense held strong.
Afterwards, Susquehanna head coach Nick Hoover reflected on the play of his team.
“The way our team pressed King’s all over the eld, limit- ing them to only one shot on goal showed fantastic commitment by everyone who played,” Hoover said. “Specifically, the highlight of the game was our first goal, a great pass by Anna Werner, and a great run and composed finish by Alee Pettit.”
Moving forward, the team is aiming repeat as conference champions.
“We’ve still only scratched the surface of what we can accomplish on the eld,” Hoover said. “We’re creating more scoring chances and playing pretty well, but I think there’s much better soccer to be played by this team.”
