Senior Brennan Rudy performed on trumpet for his senior recital on March 30 in Stretansky Concert Hall.

During his recital, Rudy performed “Konzert No. 1 c moll” (I Allegro con Fuoco) by Vladimir Peskin, “Double Concerto gor Clairinet and Trumpet” (I. Allegro, II. Largo III. Allegro vivace) by Gordon Jacob, “Fantasie en Mi Bemol” by Camille Saint-Saens, “Concerto in E-flat Major” (I. Allegro, II. Andante III. Allegro) by Joseph Haydn, “Intrada” by Otto Kettling, “Sonata for Trumpet and Piano” (I. Allegro moderato) by Halsey Stevens and “With a Little Help from my Friends” by John Lennon and Paul McCartney and arranged by Lindemann.

Rudy was accompanied by Lecturer in Music Jaime Namminga and worked with multiple other musicians to perform the music, including sophomore Becca Reeder on clarinet, sophomore Thomas Kissinger on trumpet, junior Krystina Rodkey on horn, junior Lucy Ferruzza on trombone and sophomore Benjamin Jenner on tuba.

“Probably for the last three weeks I’ve been practicing with…Namminga,” Rudy said. “The closer we get to the date, the more in-depth we have to study.”

Rudy added that practicing for the recital included a lot ofwork figuring out how to makedifferent parts work together.

In order to prepare for the performance, Rudy rehearsed with other faculty members once a week and also included a dress rehearsal.

Rudy had been practicing for this recital since last semester and has previously done a junior recital in his time at Susquehanna.

Rudy admitted that a lot of effort goes into picking pieces to perform, rehearsing with others and planning.

“The pieces I chose represents different techniques I have worked on,” Rudy said. “They represent different styles. They are from different time periods.”

He also explained that although the pieces in his recital start as early as the 1700s, a few of the pieces played come from the 20th century because the modern trumpet wasn’t invented until the early 1900s.

According to Rudy, the recital is not only to showcase everything he has done at Susquehanna, but in his entire musical career.

Rudy said he has been playing the trumpet since fourth grade, when a friend gave him one that came free with a saxophone his friend had bought on eBay. In high school Rudy had begun to take private lessons, but worried he wouldn’t be good enough to be successful if he decided to pursue a de- gree in music post-graduation.

“I promised myself in high school that if I made all-states by junior year that I would decide to go to school for music,” Rudy said.

He added that after accomplishing that goal he also went to nationals, which was enough to convince him that he should pursue a degree in music in college.

Rudy’s senior recital is one of many that take place during the semester. Senior Michaela Wagner performed her recital earlier in the day, also in Stretansky Concert Hall.

Seniors Emma Mooradian andBenjamin Nylander will perform their cumulative recitals on April 13 and April 26, respectively. Seniors who previously performed this semester include Shawn Khanna, Emily Curto, John Uhlig and Benjamin Nause.
