Senior attacker Jack Donnelly’s three goals were not enough for Susquehanna’s men’s lacrosse team as they fell to No. 20 Franklin & Marshall 13–6 on Feb. 27 in Lancaster.
Franklin & Marshall’s junior attacker Kevin Mollihan dominated the field with seven goals and two assists.
Susquehanna opened the game with a 2–1 lead with goals from sophomore attacker Colton Dick and sophomore midfielder Tyler Humphrey.
The Diplomats quickly gained momentum as they went on a four-score run. Mollihan scored two goals, one unassisted and the other by sophomore attacker Luke Keating.
Keating added another assist as freshman attacker Blake Target secured another goal. Ellis Llewellyn scored an unassisted goal to bring Franklin & Marshall up 5–2.
Donnelly scored with 11 seconds remaining to round the score out to 5–3 at the end of the first quarter.
“The defense played toughed, intercepted passes and did their best against a highly skilled opponent,” Donnelly said.
An unassisted goal from Keating and a goal from senior midfielder Tucker McBride brought lengthened Franklin & Marshall’s lead 7–3 in the second quarter. Donnelly scored with 3:50 remaining in the half, trailing 7–4 at halftime.
Mollihan entered the third with another goal. Susquehanna’s junior attacker Brian Hewett scored soon after to make the score 8–5 Diplomats.
Mollihan answered with an unassisted goal less than a minute later. He would add another assist to Keating’s goal ,the Diplomats leading 10–5.
Target scored off an assist from Briggs halfway through the fourth quarter before Mollihan added two more goals onto his performance for the night. Donnelly scored one last goal with 2:04 remaining, rounding out the final score 13–6.
Donnelly said the team should continue to improve fundamentals going forward.
“If we can master the basics of the game, it’ll pay dividends in conference play,” Donnelly said.
The River Hawks face off against Muhlenberg at 1 p.m. on March 2 on the road.
