SU visual arts magazine to showcase for students

By Sarah McMillin, Staff Writer

A new visual arts magazine at Susquehanna, titled “Illusion,” is currently taking submissions for its first publication.

Senior Dylan Scillia, who created “Illusion,” said, “The goal is to create a space for the many artists on campus to showcase their work, much like the many [literature magazines] do for the writers on campus.”

“It’s being started because I myself am a photographer and for a long time now I have wished for such a space to exist,” Scillia continued. “I hit a point where I said, ‘If you want something done right, do it yourself,’ and here we are.”

The first edition of “Illusion” is scheduled to be published online in mid-April and the edition’s theme will be “Beginnings.”

Sophomore Kaitlyn McMullen, who also works on the magazine, said that they are looking forward to seeing what students submit. “We are starting this magazine from the ground up, beginning something new and we want the campus’ idea of beginnings,” McMullen said.

Students can submit work until Feb. 20, after which a review board will decide which pieces will be published. According to McMullen, submissions will not be chosen based on style, but rather how well they fit the publication’s theme.

Both Scillia and McMullen talked about the process of creating a website and where they hope to go with “Illusion” in the future.

“There are lots of logistics and emails that need to be sent when embarking on a project like this and there is no set path for us to take,” Scillia said. “Everything we do is experimental and constantly changing.”

McMullen said that they hope to have the website up in a few weeks and will hold a launch party to celebrate both the artists and team behind “Illusion.”

McMullen also said that she encourages artists of all mediums to submit to the magazine. These mediums include but not limited to: paintings, drawings, digital media, sculpture, jewelry, VFX
makeup, body paint, shape poetry and photography.

Students interested in submitting art to “Illusion” can send their works to suvartmag@gmail.com
