The Susquehanna men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams both had a strong showing at a tri-meet against Drew and Marywood.
The women’s team left the weekend with a 170–126 win over Drew and a 214.5–81.5 win over Marywood. The men’s team went 1–1 with a 198–75 win over Marywood, but fell short against Drew with a 163–116 loss Saturday, Nov 3. In Madison, N.J.
The men left the meet with wins from senior Ryan Nathan, freshman Eric Towse and freshman Diego Mendieta.
Nathan won the 1000-yard freestyle coming in with a time of 10:35.34 just seconds before a swimmer on Drew’s team.
Towse won the 100-yard and the 200-yard backstroke coming in with a time of 53.43 for the 100-yard swim.
Mendieta won the 100-yard butterfly finishing with a time of 54.4 and Medieta finished 0.09 seconds before Drew’s competitor.
Freshman Tanner Kronski and seniors James Orzolek, Medieta and Towse teamed together to for the 200-yard medley relay. The team finished with a time of 1:39.71 just shortly behind Drew who ended the relay in 1:38.34.
Orzoley came out with the team’s top time in the 100-yard freestyle, earning a time of 48.96 and Kronski got on the leaderboard for Susquehanna, in recognition for the 100-yard and 200-yard breaststroke.
The women’s swimming and diving team left with many wins this weekend throughout the whole team.
Junior Caitlin Kelly won the 1000-yard freestyle, senior Katie Willis won the 50- yard freestyle, sophomore Olivia Fravel won the 200-yard breaststroke and senior Maggie Palaski won the 100-yard butterfly. This ultimately gave the River Hawks the ability to defeat Drew and Marywood.
“We are off to good start thus far in the season and I am excited to see what else we will be able to accomplish as the season progresses,” Kelly said.
Kelly earned a time of 11:10.96 when completing the 1000-yard freestyle. Kelly came in 17 seconds before any other competitors.
Willis finished the 50-yard freestyle in 25.08 seconds, narrowly beating out Drew’s swimmer by .48 seconds.
Fravel earned a time of 2:34.12 in the 200-yard breaststroke. Fravel’s time ranked her top as finisher in her event.
Palaski also finished her butterfly in 1:02.16.
The four females crushed Drew by 10 seconds in the 200- yard freestyle.
“As it is still quite early in our season, we’re mainly focusing on developing and maintaining our techniques and skills,” Willis said.
Both the men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams will be seen next at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 10 at Gettysburg College.
