The Susquehanna women’s soccer team was defeated for the first time since Sept. 4 by Gettysburg 1–0 on Wednesday, Oct. 17 at Sassafras Fieldin Selinsgrove.
The Bullets (8–3–3, 4–1–2) came out strong to open the match with two shots on goal within the first five minutes of play.
The second shot from freshman forward Erika Muskus went into the back of the net assisted by senior midfielder Alexa Bushey to put Gettys burg on the board.
After the lone goal of the game, the offensive efforts by both teams stalled out. Susquehanna recorded two shots in the half and Gettysburg shot four times.
Tensions ran high in the second half, with 10 of the 15 fouls occurring, including the only yellow card of the game.
Gettysburg was able to get four shots in the half compared to Susquehanna’s three.
Susquehanna senior forward Kate Cantrell led the offense for the River Hawks with two shots on goal.
Freshman defender Marley Clendenin, junior midfielder Alee Pettit, and freshman forward Anna Werner each had one shot respectively.
The Bullets were able to keep a consistent offensive attack on a pressured River Hawk defense, with a total of eight shots over the course of 90 minutes. Gettysburg’s Erika Muskus led the way with four shots on the day.
The match would see its fair share of fouls, with 15 between the two sides. The only booking came in the 76th minute as freshman defender Marley Clendenin was given a yellow card.
Each keeper would post three saves respectively on the day. Gettysburg’s freshman goalkeeper Madelyn Cunningham was able to pick up the shutout thanks to a strong defensive effort which only allowed five shots overall on the day.
Sophomore goalkeeper Madison Welliver was able to recover from the early goal to keep all other attacks out of the net but was unable to improve on her 10 clean sheets for the season.
The River Hawks (11–2–2, 4–0–1) look to bounce back from their loss against the Scranton Royals at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 20 at home in Selinsgrove.
The Royals (12-0-2) look to close out their undefeated season during Saturday’s game at Sassafras Field.
Scranton is coming into Saturday’s game after its game against Haverford resulted in a draw, its second of the season.
