Reasons To Love SU: Homecoming Week

Homecoming is one of the most wonderful time’s of the year. It is a time where members of past graduating classes of Susquehanna come together to reminisce and celebrate their years here, along with those that are currently living those memories here at Susuquehanna now.

My first homecoming two years ago was a fun experience, especially as a first-year student.

Sure, back in high school, students came back to visit throughout the school year, and we had our own homecoming football games, but there was never really a designated “homecoming” where it was planned to all come back to visit and relive their high school glory days.

I spent my first homecoming weekend at Susquehanna going to the football game, cheering on our team in the stands. I also went to a bunch of fun events throughout the weekend, meeting both current students and alumni.

Being that it was still in the early part of my first year in college, I was still very shy, and did not know too many people other than my roommate and maybe a handful of classmates.

My second homecoming, I became a lot more involved in school within that year. I had just finished my first year of being a part of Orientation Team, so I was still overwhelmed with a crazy amount of school spirit, and could not wait for homecoming weekend to come again.

Once more, I met so many amazing students and alumni during homecoming weekend. What was even cooler was that I got to experience it as an O-Team Leader, so I was a little less shy, and knew a few more people.

I got to go to football games and other sporting events and see Susquehanna students in my Orientation Team group, as well as other students in that year’s new class of first-years and transfer students. To see just how much they had grown simply from the time they moved in to homecoming weekend.

They started working at on-campus jobs, making new friends, joining new clubs/organizations, and some of them even claimed majors/minors. Homecoming was made that much more memorable for me to see that not only have I grown a lot since my first year of being a student here at Susquehanna, but also to see that I have helped others grow and get accustomed to Susquehanna and to fall in love with our university, just as I did.

With these memories, I am even more excited for homecoming weekend this year. I have met so many wonderful people within the past two years of my collegate career and I cannot wait to spend another weekend meeting alumni and getting together with current students, and cheering on our teams.

To first-years: get out there and engage in activities. I know what it might feel like to be the only first-year that still does not feel like they are getting their “true college experience” like everyone else seems to be having.

I promise, if you spend homecoming weekend out and about, you will begin to get that experience you want.

Take the time to go out and meet at least three new people this weekend. Whether it be current students, alumni, or a mixture of both, you will be able to make new connections, which may lead to you learning about new clubs, organizations or Susquehanna experiences.

Homecoming weekend is overall a fun and exciting weekend for all those involved for many different reasons; great food, great people, fun activities and events, and so much more.

To everyone, past and current Susquehanna students, faculty and staff, use this weekend to your advantage. Meet new people, take pictures, make new connections, and make new memories. I hope you all enjoy Homecoming weekend this year.
